Mataia Homestead, 2791 Kaipara Coast Highway, Glorit

Hosts: Jenny & Shane Hood

Arrival time: anytime from 4pm in time for the track briefing at 8pm.

Built in 1891 as a farm villa the Mataia Homestead and the surrounding farmland have been in the Gardner Family for over 150 years. The homestead is registered as a Category 2 Historic Building with the NZ Historic Places Trust. A restoration project began in 1989 and was finally completed in 2005.

The double storey house features 6 bedrooms (2 with queen size beds and 4 with 2-3 single beds) 2 bathrooms and 2 toilets.

A formal dining room with large open fire connects onto a relaxed open-plan living room and well equipped kitchen. From here you can spill out onto the deck and take advantage of the BBQ facilities to enjoy an el fresco meal.

Approximately five acres of developing garden features wide sweeping lawns, roses, old fashioned perennials, and a traditionally-styled knot herb garden. The original orchard has been restored using heritage fruit trees and there is a large vegetable garden. The entire section is framed by mass native plantings and two large ponds. If you wish to peruse the gardens before your walk we do recommend an early start the next morning!
