When you are ready to face the second day after a leisurely breakfast set to the sound of cooing native wood pigeons (Kereru) you will enjoy some spectacular morning views before entering into the Department of Conservation Atuanui (Mt Auckland) Reserve.
Highlights of the walk include some large kauri, rimu and puriri trees as well as a dominant taraire canopy and a rich variety of other native vegetation. Kereru, tui, fantail, ruru and tomtits are some of the birds seen and heard at Atuanui.
Look out for several species of orchid which grow in the reserve as well. The reserve is also the setting for the Mt Auckland Walkway - one of the very first walkways gazetted in New Zealand.
